The back end holds the subwoofer, it's placement is a little angled to enable free airflow (and sound pressure) from the bass-reflex opening in the woofer. The soundblaster USB sits on the top (mounted partially under the black wood) to improve the IR-remote reception. The stainless steel mesh also helps in reflecting the IR-light, this way you can use the remote control from a larger distance without having to point it exactly at the receiver. The little metal connector on the bottom right is the connection for cable tv - when used as PVR.
